Each region in Azerbaijan is distinguished by its own distinctive texture and patterns. Various vegetable and other natural dyes are used to produce rich colors. The carpets are usually medium sized.

Since Azerbaijan has been a center for great variety of crafts since ancient times, some carpets date back to the second century BC. Azerbaijani carpets can be divided into four groups equal to the four geographic zones of the country: Guba-Shirvan, Gandzha-Qazach, Karabakh and Tebriz.
